Tooting Bec SwimRun II
After the success of the inaugural SwimRun event at Tooting Bec Lido at the beginning of June (as seen in The Guardian) we brought back the event on Sunday 24th September due to popular demand.
Quite a few competitors from the first event came back for more, and were rewarded with glorious conditions as Tooting Lido enjoyed some of the best weather, and highest temperatures in weeks.
As soon as The South London Swimming Club had concluded their Sunday race we were quick to get started as we kicked off with the poolside race briefing. There is more information that competitors need to take on board with these Urban Swim Run events and so the briefing is a real chance for people to ask questions and get familiar with the format of the upcoming race.
Despite the pool temperature being a few degrees cooler than at the last event that didn't deter our participants and spirits were high as they waited to start. The beauty of this chip timed event is that people are free to start when they feel comfortable. Those real competitive athletes can jump straight in, those with less experience can wait a minute before crossing the line. A start that suits all abilities.
There is something really cool about watching the start of these events as the lido fills with swimrunners and they set off up the length of the pool to complete the first lap around the buoys. The event comprised 4 swims, totalling around 1km, and 8.6km of running, not as long or as wild as some of the events springing up across the UK, but a great challenge for those based in and around London that are after something a bit different, or indeed wanting to have a practice before taking on another event.
The field was led home by the winning male, Jospeh Rahm in an impressive 1hr 02m 17.9s, the first female, Valerie Wong finished in 1hr 14m 22.9s. In the team event Stuart Harrison-Baker & Ali Hankey came in with a time of 1hr 12m 51s.
Thank you to everyone who competed, organised and supported, and an especially big shout out to all of those willng marshals who ensured that everyone received a bucket load of encouragement and stayed on track!!
This draws to a close Total Motion Events' races at Tooting Bec Lido for 2017, but we will be back in 2018 with more aquathlons and urban swimruns, so please keep an eye out for those as we approach the new year. Why not sign up to the Total Motion mailing list to be the first to know - no spam, honest!
Until next time...
